Five Pagoda Temple
Five Pagoda Tmple, also called Jingangzuo Dagoba, used to be one building of the Cideng Temple. Cideng Temple had been ruined and only the five pagoda remains and got its present name. Built of stone and bricks, the temple is 13 meters high and is composed of three parts: the base, the seat and the top (five pagodas). In the lower seat there are exquisite inscriptions of Diamond Sutra written in Mongolian, Tibetan and Sanskrit. The upper part of the base is a niche for a statue of Buddha and four Devarajas.
Five pagodas standing side by side on the seat, the central one has seven stories while the rest on the four corners are all five-story high. In the first floor of these pagodas, there are brick carvings of Buddha, Bodhisattva, Bodhi trees and so on. While in the floors above there are a great number of niches for statues of Buddha in different shapes totaling1563. In addition, an astronomical chart and two Buddhism pictures are carved dilicately onto a wall behind the pagodas, which are valuable cultural relics.
White Pagoda
White pagoda, also called Wanbu Huayanjing Pagoda, was originally built in Liao Dynasty and is well kept after 930 year's history. It is a brick-wood structure about 55.5 meters high and looks magnificent. On the front, there is a stone tablet scripting Ten Thousand Volumes of Huayan Scripture, along with exquisite relief of Buddha, Bodhisattva, Warriors and other Buddha figures. Inside the pagoda, you can find many scriptures and tablet inscriptions written in different language of other ethnic groups. This is a good demonstration of association and exchange between different nationalities in ancient times.
The White Pagoda is the most exquisite one among all pogodas built in Liao Dynasty, and the best time for a visit will be from June to September.
Xilamuren grassland
Xilanmuren, which means "yellow water" in Mongolian, is also known as Zhaohe, Xilamuren Grassland is the nearest grassland tourist attraction to Hohhot and the earliest one in Inner Mongolia. The average temperature in summer season is about 18'C-21'C. The grassland has rolling hills and lush green grass. On the riverside of Xilamuren lies a Lama temple which was built in 1769 in the Qing Dynasty. This Lama temple had been used as a temporary abode for the Six Living Buddha in the Xilizhao Temple to spend summers. The main hall, gateway and the east and west wing-rooms remain intact up to now.
During the Nadam Fair held in each summer, the whole grassland is throbbing with excitement and full of activities. Tourists can experience a great many activities, such as living in a yurt, a camp fire party, singing and dancing, watching camel racing, horse racing, and wrestling. You can even take part in some of the competitions you are interested in; perhaps a big surprise is waiting for you!
Dazhao Temple
Dazhao Temple is in the old city of Hohhot. This is the earliest temple in Hohhot with a history of over 400 years. The temple is entirely patterned after Chinese temples except for the main hall, which is patterned after a Tibetan Lama temple. In the middle of the Buddha hall sits a silver Buddha statute, which provides Dazhao Temple with its alternative name of Silver Buddha Temple.
